Good morning steady ones!

1 Corinthians 15:58 says,

  • Therefore, my beloved brothers, BE STEADFAST AND IMMOVABLE…

You may be asking, “What does it mean to BE STEADFAST AND IMMOVABLE?

First of all, this is the concluding verse in 1 Corinthians, chapter 15, where Paul talks about the future resurrection of our earthly bodies.  Paul encouraged the Corinthian church to remain faithful to everything he had taught them.

Now, when we see the word, “therefore” in Scripture, we have to ask ourselves, “What’s it there for?”  We should always back up to see why it’s there.  What is the “therefore” there for?  This word usually indicates a summation of what was previously stated.  In this case, Paul addresses those who had fallen away from his original teaching on the resurrection.  They were listening to heresy and believing destructive ideas contrary to the gospel.  Paul restates the truth of Jesus’ death for sin and bodily resurrection and then exhorts them to BE STEADFAST AND IMMOVABLE in that teaching.

To BE STEADFAST AND IMMOVABLE means to be spiritually grounded.  A STEADFAST person knows what he believes and cannot be “tossed to and fro by the winds and the waves, blown here and there by every wind of doctrine.  Ephesians 4:14 teaches that,

  • We should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting…

See, a STEADFAST AND IMMOVABLE believer can hear false teaching and defend the Truth of the gospel without it shaking his/her own faith!

We can see from 2 Corinthians 11:3 that Paul expresses his care for this church by stating,

  • I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s craftiness, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

Even the believers who had been personally taught by the Apostle Paul were victims of deception!

In conclusion, in order to BE STEADFAST AND IMMOVABLE, we have to have a revelation of the Word of God for ourselves.  We can’t just know what it says verbatim, we need a RHEMA word from God.  This means a spoken word FROM God to us.

2 Timothy 2:15 says,

  • Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the Word of Truth.

See, to accurately handle the Word of Truth, we must not only read the Bible, we must allow it to become part of us.  The Truth of The Word of God should so penetrate our minds and hearts that it shapes our thinking and our actions.  When this happens, we can detect error when we hear it.

Do you remember how satan used Scripture against the Lord Jesus and twisted it?  He does this for his own pruposes to make it sound as though it was saying something it didn’t say.  Luke 4:9-11 says,

  • Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here.  For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.’”

If we haven’t been diligent in our study and meditation on God’s Word, we will be vulnerable to error.  Even the false religions of the world can be persuasive when they quote Bible verses to support their error!    As Christians, we can be duped by smooth-sounding heresy if we do not have a solid foundation in the Word of God.

It’s God’s desire that we grow DAILY in our understanding of Him and His Word so that we can remain faithful to the end and continue to BE STEADFAST AND IMMOVABLE.

Diligently seeking Him,

Lisa Gordon
