Before we begin, it might be helpful to you if you have your Bible. Take a few minutes to look up the scriptures I reference. God wants us to see us healed and delivered, speaking the truth in love, watching people’s lives change and demonstrating His power (and in doing so, He’s demonstrating the fact that He loves people.)
And you can demonstrate that fact. We see in Luke 7:11 that Jesus has his staff (his disciples) and a throng accompanying him. In verse 12, as He’s coming into town, here comes a funeral procession with a woman (a widow) and a large gathering was with her.
So these two crowds are coming together. As Jesus walks up, He gets a Word of Knowledge that she’s a widow and that’s her only son. Let’s continue reading in verse 13. In verse 13, notice that when Jesus saw her, He had compassion on her; it didn’t say He pitied her – He didn’t just feel sorry for her and say, “Oh, how terrible that is; oh, that’s just horrible; I’m so sorry for you; it’s such a shame when a parent outlives a child.” No, Jesus didn’t go into any of that.
There was a compassion on the inside of Him that looked upon the situation and He said within Himself, “THIS OUGHT NOT BE SO.” This is not the way my Father intended it; this is not the way God wants it!
So Jesus walks up to her (verse 13) and says, “do not weep!” WHY? Where does He get the audacity to tell this woman who has just lost her child, after she’s already lost her husband, that she doesn’t have to weep any longer? Because Jesus is the solution – now there’s a solution present.
So in verse 14, Jesus walks up to the coffin and lays His hand on the coffin and the pallbearers stand still. Now understand something, the moment He touched that coffin, He was in violation of Hebrew law – He just touched death. Now, He’s unclean. But Jesus had a revelation of the fact that there was more LIFE in him than there was death in the boy. That death couldn’t touch Jesus. No, the life in Jesus was going to touch the boy. So, Jesus says, “Young man, I say to you, arise!”
And in verse 15, the young man sits up and begins to speak. And Jesus gives Him back to his mother. Here Jesus shows why it isn’t necessary for her to weep anymore. This widow just came into contact with the anointed of God. You know, Jesus doesn’t believe that the impossible exists. He will never take “no” for an answer from the devil. In verse 16, it says, “Profound and reverent fear seized them all, and they began to recognize God and praise and give Him thanks.”
